Step-by-Step Pour Plan

How to Calculate Epoxy Volume for River Tables

River tables combine natural live-edge wood slabs with colored epoxy resin. Because live edges are organic and uneven, the width of the river channel changes along the length of the table. To estimate the volume accurately, you must measure the river width at regular intervals (every 6 inches) and average those values.

The constant 231 represents the number of cubic inches in a single US gallon. Always add a waste factor of 10% to account for spills, wood absorption, and resin remaining on mixing bucket walls.

Deep Pour vs. TableTop Epoxy

Epoxy systems are chemically formulated for specific thickness ranges. Using the wrong system can result in project failure:

  • TableTop Epoxy (1:1 Ratio): Designed for thin protective coatings up to 1/8" thick. It cures rapidly (12-24 hours) because the heat generated (exothermic reaction) dissipates quickly. If poured deeper than 1/4", standard tabletop epoxy will overheat, yellow, smoke, and crack.
  • Deep Pour Epoxy (2:1 or 3:1 Ratio): Designed for deep castings from 1" to 2" thick per layer. It is formulated to cure slowly (48-72 hours), preventing thermal runaway. Poured too thin, it may take days to solidify or remain tacky.

The Multi-Layer Pouring Process

For thick projects like river tables, a multi-layer pour is often necessary. A thin "seal coat" is first brushed onto the raw wood slabs. This seals the pores, preventing wood fibers from releasing air bubbles into the main pour. Once the seal coat is tacky (usually 4-6 hours), the primary deep flood pour can begin.
