How to Calculate Fragrance Load: The Exact Wax-to-Oil Ratio Formulas

A common mistake in handmade candle crafting is calculating fragrance load on the total weight of the finished candle rather than the weight of the dry wax flakes.

For example, if you want to make a 100g candle with a 10% fragrance load, simply taking 10g of oil and 90g of wax is mathematically incorrect (this would actually result in a 11.1% fragrance load: $10 / 90 = 0.111$). Adding too much oil to a candle can saturate the wax, leading to "sweating" (oil pooling on top), wick clogging, or flaring fire hazards.

The Correct Fragrance Formula

Fragrance load is calculated on the weight of the *dry wax* as the baseline (100%).

To find the dry wax weight and fragrance oil weight for a specific container size, use these algebraic formulas:

Dry Wax Weight = Target Total Weight / (1 + (Fragrance Load / 100))

Fragrance Weight = Dry Wax Weight × (Fragrance Load / 100)

An Example Calculation

If you are filling an 8 oz mason jar, the total weight of melted soy wax and oil to fill the container is approximately **185 grams**. If you want an **8% fragrance load**:

  • Dry Wax Weight: 185 / (1 + 0.08) = 185 / 1.08 = 171.3 grams
  • Fragrance Oil Weight: 171.3 × 0.08 = 13.7 grams

Combined, 171.3g (wax) + 13.7g (oil) = 185.0g (total mixture), which perfectly fits your jar while maintaining a precise 8% ratio.
