Calculation Logic & Engineering Formula

To calculate the exact volume and weight splits for this craft project, the workbench executes the following geometric equations:

Silicone Volume = Box Volume - Object Volume
Symbolic Equation: V = (L × W × H) - V_obj

In-Depth Crafting Guide & Density Analysis

Making custom silicone block molds for resin casting, candle vessels, soap bars, or clay sculptures requires calculating displacement volume accurately. Because liquid silicone rubber is an expensive raw material, overbuilding box dimensions or failing to subtract the master model's volume causes costly material waste.

This mold box silicone calculator multiplies box dimensions, subtracts object displacement volumes, and applies exact specific gravity presets (Smooth-On OOMOO, Mold Star, Dragon Skin, PlatSil) to give digital scale Part A and Part B weights.

Frequently Asked Questions (Mold Box Silicone Calculator)

How much clearance (wall thickness) is required between the object and mold box walls?

Maintain a minimum clearance of 0.5 inches (12.7 mm) on all sides and at the top. For large, heavy castings (over 5 lbs), increase wall thickness to 0.75 to 1.0 inch (19–25 mm) to prevent the silicone walls from bulging under hydrostatic casting pressure.

Why do different silicone brands require vastly different gram weights for the same mold box?

Liquid silicone rubbers have widely varying specific gravities. Smooth-On OOMOO 30 contains heavy mineral fillers (density 1.34 g/ml), Mold Star 15 is 1.18 g/ml, and Dragon Skin 10 is 1.07 g/ml. A 1-liter mold box requires 1,340g of OOMOO 30 but only 1,070g of Dragon Skin (a 270g difference).

How do you accurately estimate the volume of an irregular master model?

Use the water displacement method: submerge the waterproof master model in a container filled to the brim, weigh the displaced overflow water in grams (1g water = 1ml volume), and subtract this value from the total mold box volume.

How do you prevent liquid silicone from leaking through mold box seams?

Build mold boxes from non-porous melamine, acrylic, or foam core boards. Seal all internal corner seams with a bead of sulfur-free clay or hot glue, and secure the exterior joints with heavy-duty packaging tape or clamps.

Should you use a 1:1 platinum silicone or a 10:1 tin-cure silicone for resin casting?

Platinum-cure silicones (Mold Star, Dragon Skin, PlatSil) offer near-zero shrinkage (<0.1%) and last for hundreds of resin casts. Tin-cure silicones (OOMOO, Poyo) are cheaper and resist cure inhibition, but shrink 0.5%–1.0% over time and degrade faster under epoxy heat.
