In-Depth Crafting Guide & Density Analysis
Circular resin molds (such as round agate coasters, clock faces, geode platters, and circular wall art) require precise exponential volume math. Because the radius is squared in the circle formula, a minor increase in diameter causes an exponential surge in required resin volume.
This circle resin mold calculator calculates volume from diameter and depth, accounts for polymer specific gravity, and includes a meniscus surface tension factor to ensure flat, professional casts.
Frequently Asked Questions (Circle Resin Mold Calculator)
How does doubling the diameter of a circular mold affect resin volume?
Because radius is squared in the geometric formula (V = π × r² × d), doubling the diameter results in four times (4x) the required resin volume. For example, an 8-inch circle requires 4 times more resin than a 4-inch coaster of the same depth.
What causes circular resin castings to have curved or uneven top edges?
Surface tension creates a curved meniscus where liquid resin meets the vertical silicone wall. To achieve a flat top, pour resin until the liquid slightly domes over the rim without spilling. Adding a 5% meniscus buffer ensures enough resin to create a flat edge.
How much resin is needed for a standard 12-inch (30 cm) resin wall clock?
At a standard 1.0 cm pour depth, a 12-inch circular mold requires 777.6 grams (approx. 707 ml) of mixed 1:1 casting epoxy (388.8g Part A + 388.8g Part B).
Why do large circular castings warp or cup when curing?
Resin shrinks by 1% to 2% as it cross-links. If a large circular disk (12"+) cures on an uneven surface or cures too quickly in a hot room, uneven shrinkage pulls the edges upward (cupping). Cure on a calibrated leveling board between 72°F–75°F.
How do you calculate circular resin volume in fluid ounces?
Calculate volume in cubic inches (V = π × Radius² × Depth), then multiply cubic inches by 0.554 to get US fluid ounces.
