Resurfacing kitchen countertops or bar tops with high-gloss epoxy resin is a budget-friendly alternative to granite, marble, or quartz. While natural stone can cost \$80 to \$150 per square foot installed, a professional-grade DIY epoxy coating costs between \$8 and \$20 per square foot.

However, to ensure success, you must accurately calculate the volume of material required for both the thin seal coat and the thick flood coat.

Understanding the Two-Stage Coating Process

Epoxy coatings must be applied in two separate layers to prevent air bubbles from getting trapped in the curing resin:

  • 1. The Seal Coat: A very thin layer (approx 1/16" thick) brushed or squeegeed over the raw surface. It penetrates porous wood, concrete, or laminate, sealing air channels. Once this coat becomes tacky (approx 4-6 hours), the second layer is poured.
  • 2. The Flood Coat: The main protective glaze layer (approx 1/8" to 1/4" thick). It is self-leveling, creating the mirror-like, ultra-hard wear surface.

Square Footage and Coverage Math

Standard tabletop epoxy kits specify their coverage in square feet for a standard 1/8" thickness. One gallon of mixed epoxy covers approximately **12 to 16 square feet** at 1/8" depth.

Gallons Needed = (Length (in) × Width (in) × Depth (in)) / 231
